Yup. Only the other night I found I had a ~/etc directory left over from
a bungled install of some app or other, so, distracted by a telephone
call, I did su root, then, wait for it, rm -R /etc - I went hot when I
realised what was happening.

Fortunately, I had a backup of my /etc directory which was pre-potato
and a few weeks old, so I reinstated it then went to
/var/cache/apt/archive and did dpkg -i *.deb. Not very elegant, but
after a few blips and tinkering I got a working /etc directory with
everything where it should be.

Phew!!
