Soundblaster PCI : es1371 and IRQ clash ?

Hi,

This question has been asked but I could not find an answer :

I have a PII with a PCI SB64 soundcard that requires the es1371 sound
driver in the kernel. I installed my system (slink) without the sound
and then compiled kernel 2.2.1 (and 2.2.9).

Result :
 * /proc/sound does not exist
 * /dev/sndstat does not exist
if I create it (using "sh /dev/MAKEDEV audio) it exists alright but does
not support me doing 'cat /dev/sndstat
 * 'cat somefile > /dev/dsp'  or 'cat somefile > /dev/audio' does
nothing (it seems to lock up or does it wait for something ??)
 * the es1371 driver is the correct one (I checked with lspci -n) and it
is found correctly; dmesg talks about the driver but not about "sound"
 * the sound-howto is quite outdated and does not suggest a solution...

Anybody ?

Thanks !!!!

Gorik - please cc: your answer to me by mail, it doubles my chances not
to mis it...

ps : another problem :
  * if a scsi card and a sound card share the same IRQ, is that a
problem (this does _not_ apply to the previous question !! :-) ) ??
