With special thanks going to one kind individual who helped coach me through
X11 setup,
I wanted to announce:
VICTORY!!
I was finally able to get the ELSA Gloria Synergy monitor to work with
X-windows under Debian
Linux 2.1. In fact, I am using Netscape 4.5.1 under X to write this message to
you now.
Here is the run-down:
I downloaded version 3.3.3.1 of XFree86 from
http://master.debian.org/~vincent. This worked using
the apt installation method using dselect, which I find to be a *very* powerful
means of updating and
maintaining software. I downloaded this, and then placed
/usr/bin/X11/XF86_3DLabs as the first
line in /etc/X11/Xserver.
As many had written to me, the trick was getting the frequencies correct, and
then making sure the
correct modelines were selected in /etc/X11/XF86Config. I do admit some trial
and error was necessary,
but I finally settled around a HorizSync setting of 31-70, and a VertRefresh
rate of 50-200. This all fell well
within the spec of the Gloria Synergy card documentation I downloaded from the
vendor.
I then ran startx, and voila, here I am now. I also needed to tune the display
size for the various resolutions
with xvidtune, and just copied the numbers I saw on the screen to the correct
locations in the modelines.
Now the colors seem a little dark, and I am uncertain of whether there is more
tuning needed, but whatever
the case, here I am - and after a couple of days, I am prepared to declare that
the configuration is stable.
Thanks to all who helped me before - this is just great!
