new grep breaks cnews

The grep in potato breaks cnews but I am not sure if I sould submit a bug
against grep or cnews.  In particular, this line in checkactive:

awk -f $NEWSBIN/canonsys.awk $NEWSCTL/sys |
        egrep "^($me|ME)[:/]" ...

fails to find the line in the sys file starting with:

ME/

reverting to the grep in slink fixed it.
