I believe the 710c is the same series of the 712c. I accidentally
bought a 712c, which _IS_ a Windows-only printer. I returned it for a
697c, which I'm very happy with, and works great under Linux.
The 697c and other printers that are not "Windows only" use a language
called PCL; the ghostscript drivers have pretty good support for this
language. The "Windows only" (i.e. braindead) printers use the
ironically named "Printing Performance Architecture" (PPA), which is
not well supported under Linux. However, I believe a determined
individual wrote a program to get basic functionality out of the PPA
printers.
Take a look at http://www.pandi.hp.com/, look up the printer you are
interested in buying. HP has feature tables of all their current
printers; in particular, check the "Print Languages, Std." field and
make sure your potential printer uses "HP PCL" language.
Good luck,
MG
