Well, if the modem is a winmodem you are screwed as far as I know.  If
it's just a pnp modem, try doing s cat on /proc/pci and see if your modem
is detected.  Problem with PNP modems is that windows can change the
settings when it boots, so the default settings on the card (which is what
Linux uses) may not be the same as the numbers windows gives you.  If you
find it in /proc/pci then check the info you used to in pppconfig against
it.
