Without more info, I can't really say what is happening, but I will
take a guess.  Do you have the following line in /etc/conf.modules:

alias net-pf-17 af_packet

Do you have the af_packet.o kernel module?  It may be that af_packet
was compiled as a module (or not compiled at all) and is not loaded.

I can definitely say that the message about the obsolete interface is
not harmful and can be ignored.  That is not the cause of the problem.
