No, no, just the opposite: you should put "noauth" there. Actually,
according to the notes contained therein this is not supposeed to be the
right thing to do, although it works; you are supposed to have a file
called /etc/ppp/options.ttyS0 (or whatever your serial device is)
containing noauth.
