Sorry --- I didn't mean to imply by telling that part of my story that I
know anything about xdm, that was just how I happened to discover a Meta
key. The login screen on the Sun had a row of menu buttons below the "enter
username" field; the Options menu contained the submenu "Remote Host" with
"choose from list" and "enter hostname"; entering my hostname was kind of a
shot in the dark. It seems logical to me that one should be able to
replicate such a setup using xdm on a Debian box (I know I've seent the word
"chooser" in /etc/xdm/X* somewhere), but in the two minutes I looked
yesterday I didn't find it and it's not a big deal to me anyway.

I'm going to post this back on the list where the smart people hang out who
can help you with the Debian end of this; the only tangible suggestion I can
give you is to do a big fat man xdm on all machines concerned and see what
you can pull up. Hope that helps and sorry again that I accidentally gave
the impression of competence.
