	Does 'noauth' in the options file help?

	P.S. why do you have a customized ppp process?  Why not use
pppconfig, using the pon/poff scripts with the
etc/chatscripts/provider, and /etc/ppp/peers/provider files?  All
of this is the 'official' Debian ppp setup.  I believe this is
available in hamm and slink.  For me, pppconfig worked like a
charm.
