Nope. Makes perfect sense. You can also do
dpkg --get-selections >some_file_name
to back up your list of installed/selected file.
When you need to restore, restore some_file_name, do
dpkg --set-selections < some_file_name
to re-select all of the packages you had installed before the crash, and
run apt-get or dselects "install" option to get them all back.
