Problem with Quake II...
Howdy. I'm running Quake II on my mostly slink, tiny bit of potato box.
I've got a Diamond Monster 3d card, and I'm using the 3dfxGL. It works
pretty well, but I have a couple of annoying problems.
I've made the quake2.real binary suid root, and I _don't_ have the "real"
mesa library installed. In /etc/ld.so.conf, I have:
/usr/X11R6/lib/neXtaw
/usr/local/lib
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/lib/libc5-compat
/lib/libc5-compat
/usr/lib/jdk1.1/lib/i586/green_threads
/usr/lib/games/quake2
This makes it possible for me to run Quake as a normal user and not have to
be root. However, if I make any changes to video modes or do _anything_
that makes it restart (like try to play multiplayer, doh!) then I get an
error about the I/O permissions of SVGAlib (or something to that effect.)
If I try it as root, it _completely_ locks up my console - I have to log in
from another box and reboot.
So, can anyone tell me how to accomplish what I want - 1) to run Quake II
as a normal user and be able to change modes to my hearts content, and to
play multiplayer. And 2) reset the console from a remote terminal without
rebooting.
Thanks,
Dale Martin
