Or use Gnus, which can do this on the fly with mail (IIRC you don't even
need to split them into folders with procmail).  mutt is also very useful
for handling mailing lists - it has good threading support and a few
features specially for mailing lists.  It does require procmail to put
mail into seperate folders, though.

For selecting what to download when IMAP and procmail are very useful,
although you do need a shell account which will let you get your mail
with IMAP.
