I went ahead and rebooted the machine.
of course I got Kernel-panic.

I solved this by using a rescue disk and reinstalling the Kernel and modules
from it.  Then it booted and no kernel panic.
I noticed that even after that the kernel was still "my" kernel.
Solved that by using dselect and installing the available 2.0.34 kernel.

my machine survived by the skin of its teeth.
