Hmm, I don't think the standard kernel is supposed to autodetect the
3c905. You have to insert a module for it to work, the 3c590 module.

I have a 3c900 and it does not show up when booting from the
resc1440.bin image, but it installed fine when I insert the module during
installation. 

Can you check if the module is present in /etc/modules ?
