Frankly: I don't know :(
You could check if CONFIG_MODVERSIONS=n makes any difference (trial and
error) but I think "=y" is better.

You don't need the kernel-source package from debian, but make-kpkg is
really a nice tool that you should check out. Really!

Also: I have seen that there is a debian package for the new awe drivers
in debian/unstable:

awe-drv - Linux AWE32 driver source and utilities
awe-midi   - Linux AWE32 driver MIDI player
awe-netscape-libc5 - Linux AWE32 MIDI player Netscape plugin
awe-netscape-libc6 - Linux AWE32 MIDI player Netscape plugin (libc6/glibc2.0)
libawe0.4  - AWE32 shared library
libawe0.4-dev - Development files for the AWE32 library.
vkeybd - Linux AWE32 Virtual Keyboard program
awe-drv 0.4.2c-3 -> 0.4.3-pre2-1 into dists/potato/main/binary-i386/sound
awe-midi 0.4.2c-3 -> 0.4.3-pre2-1 into dists/potato/main/binary-i386/sound
awe-netscape-libc5 0.4.3-pre2-1 into dists/potato/main/binary-i386/sound
awe-netscape-libc6 0.4.3-pre2-1 into dists/potato/main/binary-i386/sound
libawe0.4-dev 0.4.2c-3 -> 0.4.3-pre2-1 into dists/potato/main/binary-i386/devel
libawe0.4 0.4.2c-3 -> 0.4.3-pre2-1 into dists/potato/main/binary-i386/libs
vkeybd 0.4.2c-3 -> 0.4.3-pre2-1 into dists/potato/main/binary-i386/sound
awe (0.4.3-pre2-1) unstable; urgency=low
  * New upstream version.

I am still using kernel 2.0.34 and an older awe driver (the debianized
version). Maybe going with the debian packages could help. If not we
could at least torture the maintainer with bug reports ;-)
