To shut the system down, before you logout type 'shutdown -r'. The system
will go thru the process of killing all running processes and then unmount
the filesystems. This is the key part, unmounting the filesystems makes
sure that all of your data was written to disk and that it is clean. After
it is done you can turn the computer off.
