X authentication problen

X is running fine apart from one problem involving the .Xauthentication file. If I login as user
bob and startx everything is fine. I happily compiled vim-5.3 for the graphical interface. Now,
if I su to root and try to run gvim I get the following error;

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
cannot open displayXlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key

So I logged in as root and su'ed to bob and tried gvim again, with the same error. I had a good
read of the X security information but I'm peturbed. This doesn't happen at home with the
'standard' XF86 distribution so I'm assuming it's a Debian thing, but what to I fix?
	I don't even have a .Xauthentication file at home, so I'm thinking that this must matter.
If I just do xhost +hostname would that fix it? What about security?

Thanks again...
