Well, theoretically they don't. If they use GPL code, they have to
keep it GPL.
Personally, I'd suggest doing the other things mentioned in the memo,
like the end-to-end ease-of-use or "UI niceties". Such as replacing
networking debug options with a generic "A network error has
occurred" message.
Maybe I should file a bug report about that :-)
BTW, as to extending the standard, if I remember the samba docs
correctly, there's at least one option that only works with another
samba on the other end. See smb.conf(5) - I have a vague memory of
propagating workgroups, but I didn't need it when I read it.
