memory swap problem

I'm encontering a weird memory swap problems: some programs 
like Emacs or Egcs won't use the swap space and crash with 
memory exhausted error messages, while others like Octave will 
make good use of swap space (I have observed the problem, using 
top and free).

According to dselect my modules are current. I have kernel 2.0.34
