Install to removable hdd

Hi all,

I am a newbie to Linux, Debian and this forum so I hope I get thru!

I have been trying to install (sneak in!) Linux from cdrom on to a PC at work so I have to do this on a removable hdd. I originally failed to install from the cdrom for some reason so I downloaded resc1440 and copied to floppy. This worked and I went as far as disc partitioning but after specifying hdb (removable) I got the error message FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition.

I have tried to find the fault but failed so I had to ask for help. The removable hdd is a Conner 1 Gb unit, formatted and empty, with no partitions and seen as drive D by Windows. If I would have to partition the disc before starting the Linux installation, can someone please give some hints on how to do this in DOS or Win95? (I am not very familiar with PC's, I used to have an Acorn computer).

Thanks in advance

Regards
