I can't think of anything in the packaging that might have caused this. On a
2.0 system, gcc should be FSF gcc 2.7.2.3, while g++ should be egcs-1.0.3 .
Try reinstalling gcc (dpkg -i gcc*deb); if that doesn't help, please provide
a detailed transcript (e.g. using script(1)) showing the problem.
