Local LaTeX configuration

Hello,

first: I'm no TeX Guru, so propably this is more a LaTeX problem than
    it's a debians.

What I'd like to do is to install our department's logo which comes as a
.ins and .dtx file with a Metafont file on my local debian system. I
extrated all information to a local dir using latex and copied them to
/usr/local/lib/texmf/fonts/... and run texhash. But the local L01
encoding still can't be found though the files appear in the ls-R file.

Installing them down under /usr/lib/texmf seems to work, but I don't
believe it's the debian way to do this.

    So what's the right way?

(Reading the fntguide and experimenting a bit with the fontimport script
    didn't help either)

           Peter
