What is in your /etc/apt/sources.list file? I use this:
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US stable non-US
If you are using ftp1.us.debian.org, you might be experiancing some
problems, I know I have been. (404 errors).
