  Ok, I've done that.  Perhaps I've misunderstood how one configures a pcmcia
card in the install script.  I have a netwrok card:  am I supposed to find some
mechanism for installing the driver for it in the "Configure PCMCIA" choice?  
  I did have a booting system before with the pcmcia daemon (I think) loading
(it complained about the missing ethernet driver, but the cardmgr started
without errors).  I tried to use modconf to add the driver, and it appears to
be the same part of the install script  - except there's a choice for
installing a driver for a pcmcia card.
