Try to adjust the midi output level using a mixer.
You can also add the AWE 32 support (it should work on a SB32, too).
(you can install the awe-drv, awe-midi awe-netscape and libawe0.4 packages
under debian, and use drvmid instead of playmidi).
The awe-drv package also has  a good faq on this.
