Missing KDE images?

I have been trying to figure this out for a long time.  Most of the kde
programs that I have installed have an inability to disply the buttons on
their toolbar properly.  This happens with the kde file browser and
other things.  Other kde programs, however, have a complete inability to
start (kcmsamba and ktop, for example).  They produce error messages like
these:

QPixmap::convertToImage: Cannot convert a null pixmap
QPixmap::convertFromImage: Cannot convert a null image
(above lines repeated a few times)
QPainter::begin: Cannot paint null pixmap
QPainter::setPen: Will be reset by begin()
Segmentation fault

Can anyone help?
