What kind of network do you have? Are you trying to simply plug an
ethernet cable between the two hosts or do you have a hub or do you have
coax? If you are trying to use twisted pair between the two systems, you
will need a crossover cable. If you have coax, you will need a T-connector
and a terminator at each end. 

How is your network wired?
