PON dials out, but PPP connection dropped

Hello,
I've been messing around with Debian for about 2-3 months now. I recently
installed hamm on a 386 box built from recycled parts.

The modem seems to be configured properly, however, when I do "pon" it waits
about 1/2 a minute, dials my ISP's phone number, and disconnects in about
1/2 a minute.

When I do "plog" there is a bunch of stuff reported, but being a newbie, I
don't really know how to interperet it.

I'm attempting to set up my PPP connection with PAP authentication, because
that is what I use on my (excuse me) win95 machine.

I've attached the output of plog; can anyone figure out what is going on?

Tia,
