I came across the same problem with one machine.  What I did was at that
point in the installation shutdown, boot again with the debian cdrom,
and enter `linux root=/dev/hdax' at the boot prompt, with `hdax' being the
root partition to be.  Then I installed a minimal system that would be
able to compile a kernel using make-kpkg, compiled a kernel, installed
it, rebooted, and continued from there.  Just ask this list if you need
more specifics :)

Does anyone know what goes wrong?
