You have BOTH smail and sendmail installed? They conflict with each other
and cannot coexist.

You need to create a ~/.fetchmailrc file. This can be as simple as
something like:
poll pop.provider.net protocol pop3 username jsmith password secret1
'man fetchmail' for further information.
