It sounds like the you are using the vga16 xserver, which only has a
depth of 4. have a look at the first line of /etc/X11/Xserver. Does it
say /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_VGA16? Then see if the server you need is
installed (what kind of video card do you have?). The following command
lists the xservers present on your system:
ls -l /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_*
If the correct server is there, and you ran XF86Setup correctly for your
hardware, then edit the first line of /etc/X11/Xserver, and change it
into the correct server.
I came across the same problem when doing a fresh debian 2.0
installation. I am not quite sure that the CDROM was burnt OK (problems
with the CD-writer were the reason for a fresh reinstall), but the
xserver packages gave errors on installation, and I had to download new
ones. I don't seem to remember that on installation it asks whether I
wanted the new xserver to be the default, as it used to in 1.3. Is this
a bug, or the result of a not-so-fine CDROM I appear to have?
