It is true that OSS/Free does not support the Midi part of the AWE (beside
OPL3 synthesis, which sounds plain bad).

But the consequence is wrong. You can still use the awe patches from the
awe-drv packages. They work great, and are free. They are also included in
the 2.1.x kernels. My Howto explains how they can be configured and used.
You can apply them by running "/usr/src/awe-drv/install.sh"

No need to buy anything.
