Hi Richard.  I own a parport drive as well.  The current linux kernels
do not support having both the drive and the printer working at the same
time.  This is being worked on however.

What version of the kernel did you try and compile?  Also, consider
using kernel-package.  It is a MUCH nicer interface to kernel compiles. 
Plus it creates a group of packages you can save and install, give to
others, etc.  Just like any other package.
