Exim queuing/retry problem.

I am using Exim 1.92, configured with option 2 (SMTP, smarthost).
Receiving mail works fine, but if I'm offline and I try to send, I get
this bounce:

I've had a look through /usr/doc/exim/* and the info/man pages, but
can't find anything relevant. I'm using the default retry
configuration of

*                      *           F,2h,15m; G,16h,2h,1.5; F,4d,8h

I am using Dominic Mitchell's multiple mailbox configuration[1] (which
involves adding suffix = "-*",suffix_optional to the userforward
configuration and setting up a funky .forward file), but I don't see how
that could affect queuing in any way.

Suggestions?

Ta,

-Dom
