Help: upgrade to Hamm not working!

Hi,

I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to hamm.  I downloaded the
upgrade script along with all the necessary packages and ran it.  The
first time I ran it, there were problems:

dpkg: regarding dpkg_1.4.0.22.deb containing dpkg, pre-dependency problem:
 dpkg pre-depends on libstdc++2.8
  libstdc++2.8 is not installed.

So I installed this manually and ran the script again.  This time it
seemed to work.

Then I went into dselect to upgrade everything to hamm, but when I got to
install, this is what happened:

Looking for part 1 of dpkg-perl ... find:
/usr/local/store0/debian/hamm/hamm/binary-i386/doc/doc-linux-pl-html_1998.03.29-1.deb:
No such file or directory

And that's all!  Looks like it's failed pretty badly.  This means my
system is in a no-mans-land state - which I'm not very comfortable about.
What should I do?
