ifconfig and virtual devices

Folks,

I need to be able to assign several IP numbers to the same interface.
I understand I can do this with something like "ifconfig eth0:1
192.168.107.4 -netmask 255.255.255.0". Unfortunately, this doesn't
work with "ifconfig 1.22 (1996-05-09)"; I get "SIOCSIFADDR: No such
device".

Is this because this version of ifconfig doesn't support this feature?
Have I committed some other error?

I tried upgrading my version of ifconfig, but it won't compile because
my ip_fw.h is not new enough. Is there some way I can find out where
files like ip_fw.h come from with only a small effort?

Thanks for any help.
