ADSL equipment has an Ethernet connection just like a cable modem. No
special support is needed from Linux.  In my area, DSL costs depend on
connection speed and the ISP. You might look at http://www.covad.com to
get an idea of the rates in Silicon Valley but be aware that it is usually
cheaper in just about every other part of the country.  I think Bell
Atlantic is offering xDSL in their neck of the woods for about half of
what Pacific Bell offers (that is just the line charge).
