These map and boot.0301 files would have been created by running lilo.
Here's what ls -l shows about similar files on my system.

-rw-r--r-- 1 root disk 512 May 11 07:27 boot.0300
-rw------- 1 root disk 3584 May 11 07:38 map

Note that they were last modified at nearly the same time, and that
boot.0300 is exactly 512 bytes long. Also, ls -l /dev/hda* shows:

brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 0 May 28 1997 /dev/hda
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 1 May 28 1997 /dev/hda1
...

Note that /dev/hda is device 0300, /dev/hda1 is 0301, etc.

When I ran lilo, my /etc/lilo.conf file said `boot=/dev/hda'. The
lilo boot was placed in the master boot record of that hard drive,
and the data which was previously there was saved in /boot/boot.0300.

Since you have a /boot.0301 file, it looks like you placed the lilo
boot onto /dev/hda1, not onto /dev/hda.

You might try looking at the boot records on partitions of interest,
using `dd if=/dev/hda size=512 count=1 | cat -v' for /dev/hda,
/dev/hda1, and whatever other partitions might be of interest
(perhaps /dev/hda2?).

Looking on my system for comparison, I see:

That is an MBR installed on /dev/hda by win95. I don't see any obvious
Microsoft ID info there, but note the error message strings. MBRs
installed by WinNT might look similar.

That's the boot sector of /dev/hda1, which is a Win95 partition. Note the
WIN4.1, FAT16, and error message strings. Other Microsoft-installed boot
sectors might look similar.

That's a lilo boot sector installed on /dev/hda to replace the one Win95
installed there. Note the LILO ID string.

Sorry to be so wordy, but I hope some of this info helped.

What partition does fdisk (either the dos or linux fdisk) show as
bootable? What partition did you install linux onto? What
partition has your Win{95|NT} installation? What did your
/etc/lilo.conf file say when you ran lilo? Did you ever manually
delete any /boot/boot.[whatever] files after running lilo? (Sorry
if I missed this information in earlier messages to the list)
