Re: NIS slows down login?




Just out of curiosity, do you have any Win95 workstations on that network?
If so, try running tcpdump on the linux box and dump the network interface
to the screen.  Are you seeing "billions" of ARP requests from the Windows
boxes to teh network broadcast address?  If so, this will throw NIS
performance directly into the toilet!

This is usually caused by HP LaserJet drivers installed for printing to
printers with JetDirect cards. If you are seeing this, look in the
Windows95 registry under Network Providers for somethig called HPJDNP
and REMOVE THAT ITEM from the registry.  Now your NIS server will get a
fine and well deserved rest from having to process ethers lookup requests
from every unix host on the network trying to service the Windows box
requests.
