localho
I installed a new Western Digital EIDE hard disk (WD22500L) on
a GigaByte GA586HX mother board addressing it in the BIOS in NORMAL
mode. It doesn't matter whether i use "fdisk" or "cfdisk" for
partitioning, i always get reported overlapping partitions by
"fdisk". Verifying the partitioning using "fdisk" i get the following
rather disturbing output:

--------------------snip-------------------------
[root]/root > fdisk
Using /dev/hda as default device!
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 4960.
This is larger than 1024, and may cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software form other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

Command (m for help): p

The claim of partition overlaps seems to be rather false regarding the
correct starting and ending points of the partitions!?

Verifying the partition table with "cfdisk" i get the following output
(table view):

--------------------snip-------------------------

This claims that the starting and ending points from partition 9
through 12 are all located on the identical cylinder 1023!?

For sake of completeness here is cfdisk's sector view:

I formatted and installed anyway, and obviously everything seems to be
running fine since two days. But i don't feel really comfortable with
these fdisk warnings.

Do i really have to worry about this or can i savely assume that both
fdisk programs are somewhat only becoming confused by the large disks
size? Can i safely ignore these warnings? Did i overlook something
when i partitioned the drive? What should i take into account for
properly partitioning to make these warnings disappear?

                                Thank you, P. *8^)
