Make shure that printing works locally on machine 1.

According to my expirience this has _no_ effect on remote printing.

Yes. That's true. Sometimes ago I had the same problems.
There have to be fully qualified domain names in /etc/hosts.lpd (as e.g.
in /etc/hosts). Something like this:
# /etc/hosts.lpd: list of hosts that are allowed to use the printing
# services of this machine. See lpd(8).
machinex.where.iam
machiney.where.iam

This is the typical response if you don't have a valid /etc/hosts.lpd
It will start printing immediately when you have changed it as shown
above. At least it did it for me ;-)
