Sendmail/fetchmail problems?

Is this familiar to anyone?

reading message 116 of 204 (2361 bytes) .popclient: SMTP error: 451 Can't
create transcript file xfWAA00603: Too many open files in system
popclient: SMTP error: 451 Can't open /dev/null: Too many open files in
system
popclient: SMTP transaction error while fetching from mail.texramp.net

I also notice that there are many sendmail/procmail invocations when
popping mail of the server.

Also, I get Unable to load interpreter.

Versions are as follows:
ii  fetchmail       4.3.6-1     POP2/3, APOP, IMAP mail gatherer/forwarder
ii  procmail        3.10.7-2    Versatile e-mail processor.
ii  sendmail        8.8.8-9     A powerful mail transport agent.
