fetchmail qmail inter-operability

Sorry if this is more of a fetchmail question.

On connecting to my IP, he automatically attempts to send me mail using
smtp. There is "no way" of changing this.

I have qmail working well using inetd & smtp & ppp link, but the
uncontrollable rush of messages when I dial up is too much for this
small 486, even though concurrency{local, remote} holds just 4.

One answer may be pop3, which the IP also supports. I can then choose
when to accept mail from him.

I've looked at fetchmail, but it seems to require smtp to be working so
it can submit the mail it has downloaded through port 25 and the normal
smtp demon (qmail-smtpd in my case). Experiments with smtp disabled and

	fetchmail ... -m "sendmail" # dan's clone

caused mail to be received but not delivered.

So whats the qmail way? I want to retain qmail as much as possible, but
don't want to wait for the mail load to subside when I need a quick
surf.
