Thanks for taking to trouble. I got my xserver working... I removed it!
Then, I went to the hamm site and reinstalled it. It seems that (perhaps)
my xserver-svga3.3-3 may have been left over from my bo system when I
upgraded to hamm. I wasn't aware I had to reinstall the xserver packages,
just the libraries. Anyway I'm now running xserver-svga3.3-1 (I think, I'm
not at my machine) and all is well with the world. BTW, the docs still
claim to only support MGA-1064SG, but it now works with my MGA-1164SG.
Thanks to all who replied. I'll defer running the XSuSe server, and stick
with the debian releases, unless I develop further problems.
