The solution that I'd suggest would be to use lilo, but since you
specifically specify that you're not using lilo, I assume that you
have a good reason why you don't want to.

Are you using a FreeBSD "rescue" disk when you try to access freeBSD?
Or are you trying to boot FreeBSD using the Debian rescue? I don't
know much about FreeBSD, but I'd be surprised if that approach were
feasible.
