There is no "us" locale.  EN_us is the closest.  One of your startup
scripts is setting the env. variable LANG incorrectly.

IIRC StarOffice does this.  Look though /etc/profile, ~/.bash_profile
and ~/.bashrc, and any scripts that they call.
