super help needed...

I just used this command:
(cd /usr ; tar cvf - . )
but didn't realize it would take up more space than I have on my disk.
Well, whien it started to complain, I halted it. But now I have another
problem... all my space is still gone... where did this put the "tar'd"
stuff?
df gives me 0% free... not good. I can't even man tar to see if it will
give me any hints.
Thanks in advance for help... I'm standing by.
peace,
Chris
