If you use either Lilo or Loadlin to boot that computer, you can get in at
boot time. Add the parameter "emergency" (without quotes) [1] to the
kernel parameters and you'll get bash without needing to log in.

using lilo, type "linux emergency" (without quotes) at the lilo prompt
as the volume to boot
