Jay,
I did some fiddling and made some calls. I found a few quirkey things but
don't know if they would affect you.
The guys here use xdm-query. At first it gives you an error message about
xdm request denied. Then you clear the key field (communications screen ->
configure) and everything works. That's moot though since you get a
session.
Sounds now like it is something with the window manager. Sorry I couldn't
be more help. I just don't have any experience using those modes.
As an aside, the guys over in the cold mill use HWM in single window mode
and still run cde!?? I haven't figured that one out yet...
Let me know if you find out anything else...

Jim,
I am not sure about the server reset. If it is a default setting, It
is there. I will double check. I believe there is something in it
not being about to write to the display. But it is NOT on the exceed
side. It is something on the Linux side that is preventing it.
Another quark about the Exceed/Linux thing is that Exceed runs off of
a SMB share on that linux box. I have had it like this for more than
a year when I used Slackware, but only a month or so with debian. I
am not sure it has anything to do with it, but I thought I would note
it to you.
There are several xdm logs that seem to repeat themselves. My only
problem is I am not sure if the times correspond to the time it seemed
to die. I will look at them and if they are worth anything, I will
bounce it to you tonight.
While it might appear the XDM does not get my request to be managed,
remember that I have had a "hangup" while actually running a session.
What I have open at the time runs fine, however, I cannot open
another window or click on any of the buttonbars to do anything.
